Flash Mobs

Flash mobs are big groups of people which suddenly perform unusual coordinated acts like dancing, singing, pillow fighting, and unique stunts in public spaces. These seemingly random performances are often coordinated through social media or emails. The first flash mob was created by Bill Wasnik, a Harper’s Magazine senior editor, in 2003. The mob gathered in Manhattan at Macy’s department store. They had a synchronized applause for around 15 seconds.

Flash mobs may be done for pure entertainment, advertising, or political campaigns. One of the most famous performances was done in January 2009 at Liverpool Street Station. Four hundred individuals broke into song and dance. It was so entertaining that a mobile company used it to advertise their product.
