To be dependent is to rely partially or completely on others for support; physically, emotionally, or monetarily. For example, children are dependent on their parents for security, well being, and care. Normally, as people grow and mature they become less dependent on others or shift their dependence. There are, however, a few individuals who remain emotionally dependent well into adulthood. Some of these individuals would be diagnosed as having dependent personality disorder which is characterized by extreme dependence on others, a lack of independence, and an extreme fear of being alone.
