Coitus interruptus or withdrawal method is the pulling out of the penis from the vagina prior to ejaculation with the objective of preventing pregnancy. “Coitus” means “sexual intercourse” while “interruptus” means “cut short”. Hence, these Latin words refer to the interruption of the normal process which is ejaculation inside the female genitalia.
This method greatly depends on the male’s self-control. Without proper timing, sperm may enter the vagina. Also, even with proper timing, the woman may still get pregnant due to the sperm that may be present in the pre-ejaculation fluid. In fact, around 28 out of 100 females who practice coitus interruptus get pregnant. Another disadvantage is its inability to protect partners from sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
