CARDINAL VIRTUES

n. in medieval philosophy, refers to the four main virtues above all other virtues. These are prudence, fortitude (or courage), temperance, and justice. Regarded as virtues natural to human beings, these were discussed in contrast to the more theological and divine ones such as faith, hope, and charity.
