BRAIN WAVES

n. a pattern of rhythmic electrical impulses detected in various areas of the brain. Recorded on EEG, they reveal changes which occur during cognitive processes and sleep stages. They are classified according to frequency into alpha, beta, delta, gamma, and theta waves. First described by German neuropsychiatrist Hans Berger (1873-1944).
