Basal Forebrain

The basal forebrain is situated in the forward-most and bottom position of the brain which is composed of structures responsible for acetylcholine production such as the diagonal band of Broca, nucleus accumbens, nucleaus basalis, medial septal nucleus, and substantia innominata. This area is important in regulating memory, sleep, and wakefulness. Damage to the basal forebrain has been associated with memory loss, impaired attention, and other cognitive deficits.
