BAIT SHYNESS

refers to animals avoiding foods that have previously been associated with gastric distress or other adverse effects. This learned avoidance is very rapid (often occurring after a single trial) and long-lasting – even though the aversive effects may not occur for several minutes or even hours after ingestion. See also conditioned taste aversion.

BAIT SHYNESS: “An animal with bait shyness has learned to avoid foods that have caused discomfort in the past.”
