Autonomic arousal disorder is a condition marked by the chronic and persistent arousal of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) that isn’t caused by an underlying medical condition. The ANS is responsible for many of the body’s automatic processes such as heart rate, respiratory functions, and digestion. Autonomic arousal disorder is pervasive autonomic arousability (AA) which is characterized by increased heart rate and palpitations, respiratory issues (like hyperventilation), stomach issues (nausea/vomiting), the need to urinate, and flushed skin. This condition is associated with anxiety and panic disorders.
