APPETITE SUPPRESSANTS

pharmacological agents that reduce appetite and may be used to control body weight. They include the amphetamines and other stimulants (e.g., phentermine), sibulramine, and serotonin agonists (fenfluramine, dexfenfluramine). Unfortunately, use of the latter compounds, particularly when combined with phentermine (so-called phen-fen), results in heart-valve defects. Therefore, this combination has been removed from the market. Although suppressants may result in short-term weight loss, there is no empirical evidence that they produce long-term weight reduction unless they are used in conjunction with a behavioral management program. Also known as anorectants.

APPETITE SUPPRESSANTS: “A person took the drugs known as appetite suppressants in an attempt to restrict appetite and lose weight. “
