APPARITION

n. 1. a visual illusion that results from the distortion of a perceived object of some kind. Often interpreted as threatening, apparitions may be associated with a neurological disorder, psychosis, or a toxic disorder, such as cocaine-induced psychosis. 2. refers to the perceived manifestation of a ghost or spirit.
