ANTICIPATORY GRIEF

sorrow and grief associated with the expectation that a valued person will die soon – similar to the grief encountered after death. This may be adaptive in cushioning the impact of grief or maladaptive in causing withdrawal from the ill person. See also complicated grief- traumatic grief.
