n. a process described in psychoanalytic theory, whereby the ego withdraws psychic energy from some unconscious desires, then strengthens other ideas with the energy to block the original wishes from consciousness. The two ideas may be opposing or similar. For example, philanthropic action may unconsciously neutralize a desire to hoard. Also known as countercathexis. See also caitilxis.
