n. a family of drugs intended to destroy pathogenic bacterias and microorganisms. Usually produced from living cells or synthetic chemicals. Ineffective against viruses. May disrupt the life cycle of the bacteria or interfere with bacterial reproduction. Over-prescription of antibiotics is contributing to new, resistant strains of bacteria.
