Active Avoidance

Active avoidance is a facet of operant conditioning that includes the use of action of some sort to avoid a negative stimulus. For instance, in laboratory research an animal observes a signal (e.g. a bell) that precedes an electric shock. If has learned to associate the bell with a shock, it will move away in an attempt to avoid that shock.
