Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-revised (EPQ-R)

The Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-revised (EPQ-R) is a self-report inventory that measures three major dimensions of personality: extraversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism. It is a revision of the Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI), which was first published in 1964.

The EPQ-R was developed by Hans Eysenck and Sybil Eysenck, two British psychologists who were interested in the biological basis of personality. They believed that personality is largely determined by genetics and that it can be measured by assessing people’s responses to a set of questions about their behavior and feelings.

The EPQ-R has 100 items, each of which is answered on a four-point scale. The items are designed to assess the following:

  • Extraversion: This dimension measures how outgoing, sociable, and active a person is. People who score high on extraversion are typically energized by social interaction and enjoy being around other people. They are often talkative, assertive, and adventurous. People who score low on extraversion are typically more reserved and introverted. They may prefer to spend time alone or with close friends and family.
  • Neuroticism: This dimension measures how emotionally stable and calm a person is. People who score high on neuroticism are more likely to experience negative emotions such as anxiety, worry, and anger. They may also be more sensitive to stress and have difficulty coping with difficult situations. People who score low on neuroticism are typically more emotionally stable and less prone to negative emotions.
  • Psychoticism: This dimension measures how tough-minded, insensitive, and unconventional a person is. People who score high on psychoticism are often seen as cold, detached, and unemotional. They may also be more impulsive and have difficulty following rules. People who score low on psychoticism are typically more warm, compassionate, and rule-abiding.

The EPQ-R also has a lie scale, which is designed to detect people who are trying to present themselves in a favorable light.

The EPQ-R has been shown to have good reliability and validity. It has been used in a variety of research settings, including clinical, educational, and occupational settings.

The EPQ-R is a useful tool for assessing personality. It can be used to understand individual differences in personality, to diagnose psychological disorders, and to make decisions about educational and occupational placement.

Here are some of the strengths of the EPQ-R:

  • It is a well-established and widely used personality test.
  • It has good reliability and validity.
  • It is relatively short and easy to administer.
  • It can be used with a variety of populations.

Here are some of the limitations of the EPQ-R:

  • It is a self-report measure, which means that it is subject to response bias.
  • It does not measure all aspects of personality.
  • It may not be appropriate for use with certain populations, such as people with low literacy skills.

Overall, the EPQ-R is a valuable tool for assessing personality. It is important to be aware of its strengths and limitations when using it.
