The Attitudes Toward Self (ATS) was designed to measure three potential self-regulatory vulnerabilities to depression. One of them is the holding of overly high standards‚ the second is the tendency to be self-critical at any failure to perform well‚ and the third is the tendency to generalize from a single failure to the broader sense of self-worth. Very consistently‚ only generalization has uniquely related to depression (see Carver et al. 1988 reference below). I have also found evidence that generalization is a prospective predictor of depression in interaction with adverse events (see Carver 1998 reference below). More recently‚ we have found that generalization relates to depression but not mania‚ suggesting a divergence among vulnerabilities to the two sides of bipolar disorder (see Eisner et al.‚ 2008‚ and Carver & Johnson‚ 2009‚ references below).

The ATS is very brief‚ and thus is conducive to inclusion even in studies that have an extensive battery of measures. Here is how we administer the ATS here‚ followed by scoring instructions:
Respond to each of the following statements by marking a number on your answer sheet. Do not leave any items blank.
